Prime Minister Narendra Modi met US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan in New Delhi on January 6, 2025.
The meeting involved discussions about the robust growth in the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership over the last four years, particularly in areas like technology, defense, space, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence.
During the discussions, PM Modi and Sullivan reviewed the progress under the India-U.S. Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET) regarding the advancements in semiconductors, AI, telecom, defense, critical minerals, and space.
The leaders expressed satisfaction with the deepening cooperation between the two nations, which has been set on a trajectory of mutual benefit and global good.
PM Modi appreciated President Joe Biden’s contributions to this partnership, recalling his recent interaction with Biden at the G7 summit in Italy.
Mr. Sullivan will be replaced by Mr. Mike Waltz after Mr. Trump takes office later this month.
Jake Sullivan meets with Minister Jaishankar and NSA Ajit Doval
Mr. Sullivan’s visit to India also included a series of high-level engagements.
He met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his Indian counterpart, Ajit Doval, to discuss bilateral and global issues.
Mr. Sullivan and India’s NSA Ajil Doval focused on implementing iCET and discussed navigating and overcoming regulatory bottlenecks to enhance technological collaboration.
One of the key highlights from Mr. Sullivan’s visit was the US decision to ease restrictions on Indian nuclear entities, such as the Indira Gandhi Atomic Research Center and Bhabha Atomic Research Center. This development will foster civil nuclear cooperation and support resilient clean energy supply chains, a long-standing goal since the 2007 U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Agreement.
The visit also touched upon strategic technology partnerships, with discussions aimed at removing obstacles in defense and high-tech trade, including collaborative efforts in areas like quantum computing and advanced materials, which are expected to be part of the deliverables during PM Modi’s anticipated visit to Washington.
Mr. Sullivan’s engagement in India was also marked by his interactions with industry leaders, aiming to bridge the gap between governmental policies and industrial capabilities, ensuring that the strategic partnership yields tangible results in innovation and technology transfer.
