Renowned engineer and activist Sonam Wangchuk, known for his contributions to education and innovation in Ladakh, is currently fasting in New Delhi.
The fast follows a series of events in which Wangchuk, along with dozens of supporters, was detained by Delhi Police while attempting to stage a peaceful protest march into the capital. Sonam Wangchuk’s supporters deemed the detention illegal, and eventually, the activist was let go.
Why is Sonam Wangchuk fasting?
Mr. Wangchuk’s fast comes as part of a broader movement that has seen Ladakh demand Statehood and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, which provides special governance provisions to protect the rights of tribal populations.
The demand stems from concerns over the dilution of Ladakh’s cultural and environmental integrity following its reclassification as a Union Territory in 2019 when Jammu and Kashmir’s special status was revoked.
The protest march and subsequent fast are not merely about administrative status but encapsulate broader issues of environmental conservation, land rights, and preserving Ladakh’s unique identity.
Mr. Wangchuk, previously involved in significant water conservation projects like the Ice Stupa, has turned his focus towards political activism, highlighting the impact of climate change and the need for local governance to address these challenges effectively.
