Bhubaneswar, Odisha, has taken a significant step towards inclusive urban development with the inauguration of India’s first sensory street, Sensephere, on Bhima Bhoi Street.

The innovative public space, designed to engage all senses, was unveiled during the ‘YuvaScape 2025’ event, marking a milestone in creating vibrant, healthy, and inclusive urban environments.

So, what is Sensephere?

Sensephere is a collaborative effort between Aaina, an NGO focused on disability rights, and WRI India, alongside the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The project aims to transform the conventional street into an interactive and sensory-rich area, particularly catering to adolescents and residents, promoting both physical and cognitive engagement.

The street features textured pathways, sound installations, colorful murals, and interactive play areas that stimulate sensory experiences.

One of the most notable aspects is the integration of adolescent voices in the design process, ensuring the space caters to their needs and fosters a sense of ownership and pride among the younger population.

The initiative aligns with broader goals of urban innovation, focusing on creating ‘Healthy Cities for Adolescents.’ The project was celebrated with a flash mob and a walkthrough, showcasing the street’s new features to the public. The event attracted over 100 adolescents and local residents, turning the inauguration into a community festival.

Ms. Sulochana Das, the Mayor of Bhubaneswar, inaugurated the project, praising its role in improving the quality of life and fostering inclusivity. ‘This isn’t just about a street; it’s about changing how we perceive public spaces, making them accessible and enjoyable for everyone, especially our youth,’ she said.

The project also dovetails with Bhubaneswar’s ongoing efforts under the Smart Cities Mission, where the city has been acknowledged for its urban development strategies. By integrating sensory experiences into everyday urban life, Bhubaneswar sets a precedent for how cities can be designed to be more inclusive and responsive to the diverse needs of their populations.
