The United States has imposed sanctions on two Chinese officials over human rights abuses in Tibet.

Wu Yingjie, the chief of the ruling Communist Party in Tibet between 2016 and 2021, and Zhang Hongbo, Tibet’s Police Chief since 2018, have been sanctioned.

US Ambassador to China, Nicholas Burns, condemned China’s policies on Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong as repressive. He called on China to respect the fundamental freedoms of all people.

Reacting sharply to the allegations of rights abuses, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the US is in no position to act as a ‘world policeman’ and should withdraw the sanctions immediately and stop interfering in China’s internal affairs.
