On August 21, 2024, tragedy struck the Escientia Advanced Sciences Pvt Ltd factory in the Atchutapuram Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Anakapalle, Andhra Pradesh.
The reactor explosion has not only claimed lives but also raised significant concerns over industrial safety in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
The Explosion
The explosion occurred during the lunch break, probably lowering the casualty count as fewer workers were near the reactor.
Initial reports from various sources indicate that the blast resulted in at least 17 deaths, with several others injured, some critically.
The exact number of casualties has been difficult to confirm due to the chaos and the thick smoke that enveloped the area, complicating rescue operations.
Rescue Operation
Firefighters and emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene. Over a dozen fire engines from Anakapalle and nearby areas worked together to douse the flames. The thick smoke hampered the efforts, but officials managed to rescue 13 workers trapped inside.
The injured were rushed to various hospitals in Anakapalle and Visakhapatnam, with the most severe cases being treated at NTR Hospital in Anakapalle and KG Hospital in Vizag.
The Andhra Pradesh government has ensured that medical treatment is provided free of charge, with Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu personally overseeing the response.
Investigation
An inquiry has been initiated to determine if negligence or inadequate safety measures contributed to the disaster. Minister Vasamsetti Subhash highlighted a potential link between the accident and the previous government’s policy on third-party safety audits, suggesting a decline in safety standards.
The incident has led to public outcry, demanding stricter safety regulations and compensation for the victims. Employees gathered outside the company, calling for justice and better safety protocols.
