The state, known for its lush green landscapes, has almost turned into a vast waterbody, with rivers overflowing their banks, submerging homes, and displacing thousands.

The latest reports show that the state has seen unprecedented rainfall, with Agartala recording 330mm in the last 24 hours alone, a figure that underscores the intensity of this weather event.

This deluge has led to widespread flooding and triggered landslides, claiming lives and leaving a trail of destruction.

A massive rescue operation is underway, with over 200 teams from various disaster response forces working tirelessly.

Human toll and rescue efforts

At least ten fatalities were reported across South Tripura, Gomati, and Khowai districts.

Over 34,000 individuals have been forced to seek refuge in over 346 relief camps across eight districts. These camps, managed by state and national disaster response forces, are currently the only sanctuary for many who have lost their homes to the floods.

Government and community response

Tripura’s Chief Minister, Manik Saha, has been actively overseeing relief operations, visiting flooded areas, and ensuring that aid reaches those in need. He attributed the sudden increase in rainfall to a depression in the Bay of Bengal, which has exacerbated the situation, particularly in South Tripura and Gomati.

The government has declared a two-day closure for schools and colleges, urging residents to stay indoors due to the ongoing threat of further rainfall and landslides.
