Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 2, 2014, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission) has completed ten years of implementation. Let’s see what the program has achieved thus far.

Over the past decade, the Swachh Bharat Mission has certainly succeeded, evidenced by the construction of over 12 crore toilets nationwide. This effort has propelled rural sanitation coverage from a mere 39% to an impressive 100%, declaring over six lakh villages Open Defecation Free (ODF). The transformation reduced health issues associated with poor sanitation, such as diarrhea and malnutrition.

The Mission’s impact extended beyond infrastructure. It sparked a nationwide movement, encouraging citizen participation through campaigns like the Swachhata Hi Seva, where millions join hands in cleanliness drives.

The initiative’s success is also reflected in the Swachh Survekshan, where cities like Indore have consistently topped the cleanliness charts, setting benchmarks for urban sanitation across India.

In recognition of these efforts, the World Health Organization’s Director-General praised the initiative for contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in improving public health and sanitation.

Today, on the 10th anniversary of the Mission, Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in a cleanliness drive with school children, emphasizing the importance of continuing this legacy.

Mr. Modi also launched several new projects worth over Rs 9,600 crore, focusing on urban water and sewage systems and enhancing waste management in the Ganga basin under Mission Amrit, signaling a move towards comprehensive urban sanitation and water management.

The Swachh Bharat Mission has been more than just about cleanliness; it’s about dignity, health, and empowerment, especially for women and marginalized communities. The initiative has not only created physical infrastructure but also contributed to a culture of cleanliness.
