India opened its medal tally at the Commonwealth Games on Saturday as weightlifter Sanket Sargar won a silver medal in the 55kg category, losing the gold in a close contest.
The 21-year-old weightlifter from Maharashtra lifted 113 kg in ‘Snatch’ and 135 kg in ‘Clean and Jerk.’ Although he tried to lift 139 kg later, the attempts failed.
Sanket’s total lift of 248 kg secured him silver and kickstarted India’s hunt for medals at Birmingham.
Mohamad Aniq of Malaysia took gold with a total lift of 249kg.
Although Mohamad lifted 107kg in ‘Snatch’ and was 6kg away from Sanket Sargar’s top spot, he managed a lift of 142kg in ‘Clean and Jerk,’ 7 kgs ahead of the Indian weightlifter.
Over 200 athletes from India are competing at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
