Reliance Jio, one of India’s leading telecommunications providers, experienced a significant network outage on September 17, 2024, that left thousands of users across the country without mobile and internet services.
The disruption, which began around 11:15 AM, saw over 10,000 users reporting issues, with complaints peaking at approximately 12:20 PM, according to outage tracking platforms.
The outage affected both Jio’s mobile network and JioFiber broadband services, with users reporting a lack of signal, inability to make calls and no internet connectivity.
According to posts on X (formerly known as Twitter), the hashtag #Jiodown trended as users shared their frustrations and memes about the sudden service drop.
Today’s outage marks one of Jio’s more severe disruptions since its inception, highlighting the challenges of maintaining robust network services in a country with a vast and ever-growing digital population.
Jio reacts to the outage
Reliance Jio confirmed the outage in a statement, attributing it to “minor technical issues,” which they later clarified were due to a fire at one of their data centers in Mumbai. ‘This morning, some Jio customers in Mumbai faced problems in availing seamless services on account of minor technical issues. The same have been resolved, and seamless services of Jio have been fully restored,’ stated a Jio spokesperson.
