In a push towards grassroots democracy and rural development, Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has spearheaded an ambitious Gram Swaraj program towards empowering local governance across the state’s 13,326 panchayats.
The program commenced with simultaneous Gram Sabhas across the state, aiming to revitalize the panchayat system and ensure the development agenda is driven by the people, for the people.
Pawan Kalyan emphasized the importance of this program by stating, “Our villages are the backbone of our nation. Empowering them through Gram Swaraj is not just a policy; it’s a commitment to Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of self-sufficient villages.” Mr. Kalyan’s vision aligns with the broader national narrative of decentralized governance, where local communities have a say in decisions affecting their lives.
The launch of the Gram Swaraj program is to be backed by concrete actions aimed at financial empowerment and transparency. Here are some of the key aspects.
Holding Gram Sabhas
The meetings are not just about gathering, but they will be the platforms for villagers to discuss, plan, and decide on local development projects under schemes like MGNREGA.
Pulse Survey
A unique initiative to gauge the effectiveness of the Jal Jeevan Mission, ensuring that funds allocated for clean water reach their intended purpose.
Increased funding for celebrations
A symbolic yet significant increase in funds for Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations at the panchayat level, from a mere ₹100 to ₹10,000 and ₹250 to ₹25,000, respectively, signaling a new respect for local governance.
Pawan Kalyan calls for public participation
Pawan Kalyan called for all sections of society to participate in these Gram Sabhas. “This is about everyone, from farmers to students, getting involved in shaping their future,” he remarked, emphasizing the program’s inclusivity.
