Magnitude 5.7 Earthquake jolts Samoa Islands region

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Samoa Islands region on June 18, 2023.

While the United States Geological Survey reported a 5.7 magnitude, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported a 5.9 magnitude.

The quake occurred at the coordinates ‘14.831°S 173.210°W’ at a depth of 10 km.

The earthquake’s epicenter is roughly 140 km from Hihifo, Niuas, Tonga, and 191.2 km from Apia, Tuamasaga, Samoa.

No Tsunami warning has been issued so far.

According to the USGS – “the eastern margin of the Australia plate is one of the most seismically active areas of the world due to high rates of convergence between the Australia and Pacific plates.”
