An ACP and a Circle Inspector have been suspended following allegations of misconduct and abuse of power in the case of actress Kadambari Jethwani, amid reports that more high-profile suspensions, including that of IPS officers, would follow.

The case, which has captured national attention, revolves around Ms. Jethwani’s claims of being subjected to illegal arrest, torture, and harassment by Andhra Pradesh police officials.

What is the issue about?

Ms. Jethwani, an actress based in Mumbai and also a doctor by profession, accused a political leader belonging to YSRCP in Andhra Pradesh, Kukkala Vidyasagar, of orchestrating a false case against her and her family over a land deal because she filed a harassment case against an Industraliast in Mumbai.

The alleged false case in Andhra Pradesh led to her and her parents being detained in Vijayawada, where they spent approximately 40 days in custody, she has said.

Newspapers in Andhra Pradesh have reported that the tickets to Mumbai were booked by police a day before the actual complaint was made at the police station.

The actress has now blamed three senior IPS officers, including former NTR district police commissioner Kanthi Rana Tata, former NTR district rural DCP Vishal Gunni, and former intelligence chief P Seetharamanjaneyulu, for colluding with YSRCP leader Vidyasagar and fabricating a false case against her.

Following these allegations, the NDA government in Andhra Pradesh initiated a thorough investigation. The suspension of the police officers marks a pivotal moment in the case, signaling a potential shift in how such allegations against law enforcement are handled.

According to reports, action against the accused IPS officers is imminent and is a matter of when.
