Jaishankar’s visit to the Maldives, his first since assuming office for a second term, is seen as crucial for India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy and its “SAGAR” vision—Security and Growth for All in the Region.

The Maldives, a key maritime neighbor, has been a focal point of India’s strategic interests in the Indian Ocean.

How the External Affairs Minister’s trip unfolded

The visit started with a meeting between Mr. Jaishankar and Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu. The two leaders discussed ways to enhance the bilateral relationship between the two countries and explored avenues for further cooperation.

Jaishankar also met with Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and other top officials to discuss various issues, including trade, investment, and security.

One of the highlights of the visit was the inauguration of several India-funded projects in the Maldives. Mr. Jaishankar and President Muizzu inaugurated a water and sewerage network in 28 islands of the Maldives, a step expected to significantly improve the quality of life for thousands of Maldivians. The project, which is part of India’s Line of Credit (LoC) assistance to the Maldives, is seen as a testament to India’s commitment to developing the Maldives.

Minister Jaishankar also visited the Greater Male Connectivity Project (GMCP) site, a flagship development project that will connect the capital city of Male with the adjoining islands of Villingili, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi. The project is expected to boost connectivity and economic development in the region.

Mr. Jaishankar and Maldives Foreign Minister Shahid signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the introduction of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in the Maldives. This initiative is expected to facilitate seamless financial transactions between the two countries and pave the way for greater economic cooperation.

Mr. Jaishankar, along with Mr. Shahid and Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, planted a sapling at the Lonuziyaaraiy Park as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Ek Ped Maa ke Naam” initiative and President Muizzu’s 5 Million Tree Project.
