Droupadi Murmu, on July 21, 2022, became the first-ever tribal woman to be elected the President of India. She is also only the second woman to become the first citizen.
The 64-year-old, who won over 64 percent vote in the electoral college, will be the youngest President India has ever had. She will be sworn in on July 25 by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana.
Droupadi Murmu’s professional life started with state government jobs in her native state Odisha, where she had worked as a teacher. Prime Minister Modi applauded her humble beginnings.
President-Elect Droupadi Murmu has served as the Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021. Earlier, she served as a Minister in the Odisha state government during the BJP-BJD coalition.
As congratulations and best wishes poured in, the opposition candidate in the Presidential race, Yashwant Sinha, congratulated the 15th President in a tweet.
