Indonesia stadium stampede leaves 125 dead

An Indonesian league soccer match held at Kanjuruhan stadium in Malang, East Java, resulted in a clash between fans, a police intervention, and a stampede that killed at least 125 people.

Home team Arema FC played against Persebaya Surabaya in a stadium packed with soccer fans on October 1, 2022.

Expected to have finished by Saturday night, the game continued into the early hours of Sunday. Home team Arema FC suffered a 2-3 defeat against rivals Persebaya Surabaya.

The Arema fans charged into the stadium, and clashes ensued. The police resorted to using tear gas and triggered a rush towards the exit, resulting in one of the worst stampedes in history.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo ordered a cessation of all soccer matches until further notice.
