India beat New Zealand by seven wickets in the first T20 of the three-match series.
The match in Jaipurâs Sawai Mansingh Stadium on November 17 was also the first victory for the combination of new head coach Rahul David and new captain Rohit Sharma.
New Zealand put up a decent performance posting a score of 164/6. Martin Guptill hit 70 (42), and Mark Chapman hit 63 (50).
Ravichandran Ashwin delivered a frugal spell of 2/23.
Suryakumar Yadav 62 (40) and Rohit Sharma 48 (36) helped the Indian scoreboard catch up with the NZ.
The final over could have taken the match either way, with India needing ten runs off six balls. Rishabh Pant 17 (17) rose to the occasion, and now India leads the series 1-0.
Suryakumar was awarded the man of the match.
