Former Member of Parliament from the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), Nandigam Suresh, was arrested in Hyderabad early Thursday morning over his alleged involvement in the 2021 attack on the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) office in Mangalagiri.
The arrest operation was executed by Andhra Pradesh police, who tracked down Mr. Suresh to a guest house in Hyderabad’s Miyapur area.
The arrest follows the Andhra Pradesh High Court’s dismissal of anticipatory bail petitions filed by several YSRCP leaders, including Suresh, in connection with the same incident.
The court’s decision not to grant bail and its refusal to suspend the order for an appeal to the Supreme Court paved the way for immediate police action.
The incident in question occurred in October 2021 when a group, reportedly including YSRCP cadres, attacked the TDP headquarters, allegedly in retaliation to comments made by a TDP leader against then Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. This event escalated tensions between the two major political parties in Andhra Pradesh, leading to multiple legal battles.
Following the arrest, the former MP was promptly transferred to Mangalagiri, where he is expected to be produced before a local court.
The police have also intensified their efforts to apprehend other leaders named in the case amid reports that several YSRCP figures, including Devineni Avinash and Jogi Ramesh, are currently absconding.
