Bank of America, one of the largest banks in the United States, experienced a significant technical outage on October 2, 2024, which left customers nationwide struggling to access their accounts. Some who managed to access their accounts reported seeing a zero balance.

Reports began flooding social media platforms and outage trackers like Downdetector around mid-morning, with the peak of issues occurring when over 20,000 customers reported the technical glitch.

The outage affected online banking platforms, mobile apps, and ATM operations. Some users were unable to withdraw cash or experienced transactions that didn’t immediately reflect in their accounts.

Bank of America acknowledged the issue in a statement, confirming that some clients were ‘experiencing an issue accessing their accounts and balance information.’ However, they reassured the customers that the problems were being addressed and largely resolved by the evening of October 2.

However, the bank has not disclosed the root cause of the outage, leaving room for speculation on whether this was due to a cyber attack, internal system failure, or another technical glitch.
