In one of the biggest anti-Naxal operations in recent times, security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur-Dantewada border region have killed around 30 Maoists in a fierce encounter that unfolded on October 4, 2024.

How it unfolded

The encounter, which began around noon in the dense forests near the villages of Govel, Nendur, and Thulthuli, involved a strategic deployment of over 1,000 personnel from the Districts Reserve Guards (DRG) and Special Task Force (STF). These forces were directed towards an area where Maoists were reported to be holding a meeting, likely to strategize or conduct training sessions.

The area was encircled, preventing any escape routes for the Maoists, who were reportedly heavily armed.

The intense exchange of gunfire is said to have lasted several hours, only concluding late in the evening. The dense vegetation, a result of recent monsoon activity, posed significant challenges to the operation, but the forces managed to maintain their tactical advantage.

Major blow to Maoists

Initial reports confirmed the elimination of over 30 Maoists, with bodies and a significant cache of weapons, including AK-47s and self-loading rifles, recovered from the site. The operation’s success was further bolstered by the recovery of these arms, indicating a substantial blow to the Maoist armory.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai praised the operation, terming it a major step towards eradicating Maoist influence in the region. He also mentioned preparations for potential retaliatory actions from the Maoists, indicating a heightened state of alertness.
