Telugu states Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are grappling with an unprecedented rise in fever cases as August 2024 draws to a close.
The surge is being primarily attributed to seasonal diseases like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya and has put the healthcare systems of both states under immense pressure, prompting urgent public health measures.
Andhra Pradesh’s battle against Dengue
Recent data from Andhra Pradesh reveals a staggering increase in dengue cases, with over 5,000 cases reported within the first eight months of the year, marking a 36% rise compared to the previous year.
Hospitals across the state continue to report bed shortages, with fever patients overwhelming emergency rooms. Health officials attribute the spike to the monsoon season, which creates breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
The state government has initiated fogging operations and public awareness campaigns, urging citizens to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
Telangana’s Comprehensive Fever Survey
Telangana has taken a proactive approach by conducting a fever survey, which has identified over 265,000 cases, indicating the severity of the situation.
Dengue tops the list with 5,372 cases, followed by malaria and chikungunya.
High-risk districts like Hyderabad, Suryapet, and Medchal-Malkajgiri are particularly affected, prompting Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to call for intensified health measures.
The government is responding by setting up rapid response teams and enhancing testing facilities to manage the outbreak effectively.
