A rocket attack targeted the residence of the late Mairembam Koireng Singh, the first Chief Minister of Manipur, in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on September 6, 2024.

The rocket landed in the compound of the former CM’s residence in Moirang, a town significant for its historical ties, including being the site where the Indian National Army hoisted the Indian flag in 1944.

The attack resulted in the death of a 70-year-old man, RK Rabei Singh, and left five others, including a 13-year-old girl, injured. The rocket, suspected to be an improvised projectile, struck around 3:30 PM local time.

Reports suggest these “rockets” are homemade, utilizing galvanized iron pipes attached to explosives, indicating a degree of sophistication in the weaponry used by the attackers.

It was only days ago that drones were used against security forces in Imphal.

Security forces were mobilized after the incident, and a high alert was declared in the region.

The Manipur government ordered the closure of all educational institutions on September 7, citing safety concerns.

The attack led to locals demanding action against the perpetrators. Residents set up a temporary blockade to prevent the police from moving the body.

The Coordination Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) declared an indefinite ‘public emergency’ and urged the residents to stay indoors.
