To address the strained relations, bolster ties, and discuss the Telugu film industry’s future trajectory, Tollywood representatives met Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy at the Telangana State Police Command and Control Centre in Banjara Hills on December 26, 2024.
The meeting aimed at creating a constructive dialogue between the state government and the film industry and saw participation from key figures, including actors, directors, and producers.
The delegation was led by Dil Raju, Chairman of the Telangana Film Development Corporation (FDC), who has been instrumental in bridging the gap between the film fraternity and the government. Other attendees included actors like Nagarjuna and Venkatesh, producers such as Allu Aravind, and directors like Koratala Siva and K Raghavendra Rao.
The fallout of the Sandhya Theatre stampede
The agenda of the meeting was to address several pressing issues that have recently strained the relationship between the government and the film industry, particularly following the tragic stampede at Sandhya Theatre during the premiere of Allu Arjun’s ‘Pushpa 2: The Rule’.
CM Revanth Reddy emphasized the importance of maintaining strict law and order, stating there would be no compromise on this front, yet committed to supporting the Telugu film industry in its growth.
The meeting also touched upon the controversial topic of ticket pricing and benefit shows. After the incident with ‘Pushpa 2’, the government decided to ban benefit shows in Telangana. However, the CM clarified that while no special privileges would be extended, the focus should be on the broader picture of industry growth rather than minor operational issues.
Growing the Film Industry while projecting Hyderabad as a hub for production
Discussions revolved around the industry’s role in economic development and the potential for elevating Hyderabad as an international hub for film production.
CM Revanth Reddy shared his vision of making Hyderabad a global destination for filmmaking, suggesting initiatives like national conclaves to invite industry leaders from around the world.
The Film Industry’s social responsibilities
Another significant point was the government’s proposal for the Telugu film industry to engage more actively in social campaigns, especially preventing the use of drugs.
The state government also suggested using cinema ticket tax revenues for educational initiatives, like establishing integrated schools and showcasing a commitment to societal betterment through cinema.
The film industry, in response, showed appreciation for the government’s proactive approach. There was a consensus on moving forward with mutual cooperation to ensure both the growth of the industry and its contribution to societal welfare.
