Prime Minister Narendra Modi has landed in Rome, Italy, for the G20 Summit. This is the Prime Minister’s 8th participation in a G20 Summit, and his visit follows the invitation from the Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
The previous G-20 Summit was hosted by Saudi Arabia, but it was a virtual conference. The last in-person meeting was in Osaka in June 2019.
India is a founding member of the G20, and the group represents approximately 80% of the world’s GDP and 60% of the world’s population.
Mr. Modi will be in Rome from 29th to 31st of this month before leaving for Glasgow, UK, to attend the World Leaders Summit of COP26.
What are G-20 Summit’s Priorities this year?
Italy’s chosen theme is ‘People, Planet and Prosperity.’
The Summit this year will focus on “recovery from the pandemic, and strengthening global health governance, economic recovery and resilience, climate change and energy transition and sustainable development and food security.”
Bilateral Meetings
The Prime Minister will meet the Italian and UK Prime Ministers on this trip.
He will also be meeting Pope Francis at the Vatican.
Mr. Modi will also meet the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia and the President of Indonesia. Saudi Arabia hosted the last G20 Summit, and Indonesia will host the next Summit.
More bilateral meetings are possible.
COP26
While the COP26 is scheduled from 31st October to 12th November, the ‘World Leaders’ Summit’ will be held on the 1st and 2nd of November 2021.
“The Prime Minister will deliver the national statement at the World Leaders’ Summit on 1st November,” said the Ministry of External Affairs.
