The Central Intelligence Agency of the United States turned 74 on September 18, 2021. The Agency came into being in 1947, with then-President Harry S. Truman signing the National Security Act.
Initially created out of a necessity for properly coordinated intelligence during the second world war, the U.S. organization took on several names and duties over the years before the ‘Office of Strategic Services’ transformed into the CIA of today.
Made famous by several Hollywood movies, the CIA is a world-renowned name.
The Agency’s operations beyond intelligence-gathering are mostly classified, but operations such as ‘Neptune Spear,’ which killed Osama Bin Laden, make it abundantly clear that the organization does indulge in activities beyond a desk job.
Headquartered in Langley, Virginia, the Intelligence Agency is currently headed by Director William Joseph Burns.
