Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in the 19th East Asia Summit (EAS) in Vientiane, Lao PDR, on October 11, 2024, marked an important chapter in India’s diplomatic outreach and strategic alignment within the Indo-Pacific region.

He highlighted the convergence between India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative and the ASEAN Outlook on Indo-Pacific, signaling a cohesive regional approach towards peace and prosperity.
PM Modi’s speech reiterated India’s diplomatic stance and called for global cooperation in combating terrorism and ensuring regional security, especially given the rise in global conflicts.
Mr. Modi said that the united goal is development and not expansionism.
Bilateral meetings
Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in bilateral talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, where discussions focused on deepening ties across technology, trade, defense, and more, reflecting India’s intent to strengthen its strategic partnerships in Asia.
Mr. Modi’s talks with New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Chris Luxon, further broadened India’s diplomatic canvas, touching upon sectors from space technology to agriculture.
The Prime Minister also held talks with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
Culture takes center stage
PM Modi’s visit was enriched by his participation in witnessing the Lao Ramayana, which portrayed the shared heritage between India and Lao PDR.
Mr. Modi’s meeting with monks and spiritual leaders celebrated India’s recognition of Pali as a classical language.
The Prime Minister’s visit also highlighted India’s contributions beyond diplomacy, such as the restoration of the Vat Phou temple complex by the Archaeological Survey of India, underscoring India’s commitment to cultural preservation in the region.
