The US fighter jets and naval ships conducted a series of targeted strikes against Houthi rebel positions across Yemen beginning October 4, 2024.
The strikes were aimed at disrupting the capabilities of the Houthi rebels, who have been increasingly aggressive in their attacks on shipping in the Red Sea, a critical global maritime route.
According to reports, the targets included weapons systems, bases, and other military equipment utilized by the Iran-backed rebels. The US Central Command confirmed the action, stating that these strikes were a response to the Houthis’ continued threats to international maritime security.
The Red Sea, a route for 10% of global trade, has become a focal point of regional tensions. The Houthis’ recent missile and drone attacks on commercial vessels have raised alarm bells among global maritime powers, prompting US military action.
While allies like the UK and several European countries expressed support for the US actions, emphasizing the need for security in global shipping lanes, Iran condemned the strikes, accusing the US of overreach and exacerbating regional instability. Iran’s support for the Houthis, both financially and militarily, has been a point of contention, with US officials highlighting Iran’s role in fueling the conflict.
Yemen has been embroiled in a civil war since 2014 and is facing one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters.
