In a chilling incident that has drawn widespread condemnation, a woman from Katrial village in Medak district, Telangana, was brutally killed on suspicion of practicing black magic, locally known as ‘Bhanamati.’ The incident, which occurred on October 3, 2024, has ignited discussions on superstition, human rights, and the rule of law in rural settings.
Beaten and set ablaze
According to reports, the woman was accused by villagers of bringing misfortune upon the community through her supposed magical practices.
Following a confrontation, she was allegedly beaten and then set ablaze, leading to her death.
Several posts on social media highlighted the horror of the event, with users expressing disbelief and demanding justice for the victim.
Three arrested so far
The Medak police responded to the outrage, arresting three individuals in connection with the murder.
The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, and the body of the deceased was sent for post-mortem examination.
The cause of death was confirmed, but due to the nature of the incident, further forensic analysis, including the preservation of viscera, was undertaken to understand any potential poisoning before the burning.
