To reduce noise pollution, Hyderabad’s City Police Commissioner, CV Anand, has issued a comprehensive ban on using DJ systems and firecrackers during religious and cultural processions throughout the city.

Effective from October 1, 2024, this ban comes in response to escalating concerns over noise pollution, public safety, and law enforcement challenges during such events.

Why the ban?

Addressing the issue of noise pollution, Commissioner CV Anand said the police emergency helpline has seen 500 percent increase in call volume during some events. Mr. Anand played video clips to point out the problems arising out of such shows and events.

The discussions highlighted the detrimental effects of excessive noise, which range from health issues like increased heart rates and sleep disturbances to potential law and order disruptions due to crowd behavior.

The ban decision was made following extensive consultations with various stakeholders, including political figures, religious leaders, and community representatives.

The ban order, announced by Commissioner Anand, prohibits DJs and includes restrictions on firecrackers, sound amplifiers, and other high-decibel sound-generating equipment.

Noise regulations

While the ban on DJs is absolute during processions, sound systems are still permitted under strict decibel limits. These restrictions vary by area.

  • Industrial Areas: 75 decibels during the day and 70 at night.
  • Commercial Areas: 65 decibels during the day and 55 at night.
  • Residential Areas: 55 decibels during the day and 45 at night.
  • Silence Zones: 50 decibels during the day and 40 at night, encompassing areas within 100 meters of hospitals, schools, colleges, and courts.

If anyone violates the ban…

Violators of this new policy face severe penalties, including a potential five-year jail term and a fine of one lakh rupees.

Additionally, repeat offenders might incur a daily fine of ₹5,000. This stringent enforcement aims to ensure compliance.
