India successfully launched the Agni-IV Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha, on September 6, 2024.
The test, executed under the supervision of the Strategic Forces Command, validated the missile’s operational and technical parameters.

The Agni-IV, capable of carrying both nuclear and conventional warheads, has a range of 3,000 to 4,000 kilometers, positioning it as a critical component of India’s deterrent arsenal against regional threats.
Recent developments in India’s missile program have been rapid, with the Agni-IV test following the Agni-Prime’s successful launches earlier in the year. The Agni-Prime, with its range of 1,000-2,000 kilometers, complements the Agni-IV by providing a versatile option for strategic defense scenarios.
These tests are part of a broader initiative to modernize and indigenize India’s defense systems, reducing dependency on foreign technology.

The successful launch was met with commendations from the defense ministry, showcasing the collaborative effort between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Strategic Forces Command, and other defense entities.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his pride in the nation’s scientific community, stating, “Proud of our DRDO scientists for another successful missile test, reinforcing our commitment to a strong and self-reliant India.”
