To bolster India’s ‘Act East’ policy and deepen its engagement with Southeast Asia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a two-nation tour, marking his first-ever bilateral visit to Brunei and a subsequent visit to Singapore. The journey, which commenced on September 3, 2024, focuses on enhancing strategic partnerships in the region.
Brunei Visit
PM Modi’s visit to Brunei was historic, being the first by an Indian Prime Minister on a bilateral basis. The visit coincided with the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Brunei, adding significance to the interactions.
During his stay, PM Modi engaged in a series of high-level meetings with Brunei’s leadership, including Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah. The discussions aimed at advancing the historical relationship to new heights, focusing on cultural exchanges, trade, and defense cooperation.
The visit elevated the bilateral relationship to an “Enhanced Partnership,” underscoring the strategic direction both nations wish to take their relations.
Mr. Modi also connected with the Indian diaspora in Brunei, recognizing their role as a bridge between the two nations. His visit included the inauguration of the new chancery premises of the Indian High Commission, symbolizing the strengthening of ties.
Singapore Visit
From Brunei, PM Modi proceeded to Singapore, where discussions are slated to deepen the Strategic Partnership, particularly in emerging areas like advanced manufacturing, digitalization, and sustainable development.
In Singapore, PM Modi will meet President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, and other senior leaders, signaling a comprehensive engagement to set the stage for future collaborations.
The visit to Singapore is highlighted by the anticipation of agreements in semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and skill development, reflecting India’s intent to enhance economic ties with one of its largest FDI sources.
Act East Policy
Both visits are integral to India’s ‘Act East’ policy, aiming to foster closer economic, strategic, and cultural ties with Southeast Asian nations, enhancing India’s presence in the Indo-Pacific region.
ASEAN Relations
PM Narendra Modi’s engagements in Brunei and Singapore are part of a broader strategy to strengthen India’s relationship with ASEAN countries, pivotal for India’s geopolitical strategy in Asia.
