The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, on charges related to financial irregularities.
Dr. Ghosh, who served as the principal from February 2021 until his resignation in August 2024, was taken into custody after being interrogated for over two weeks by the CBI.
The arrest of Dr. Ghosh and three others – Biplab Singha, a vendor; Suman Hazra, involved in medical supplies; and Afsar Ali, Ghosh’s security guard – underscores the depth of the alleged corruption. The arrests come after extensive investigations, including raids and polygraph tests, to uncover the full extent of the financial misconduct at R.G. Kar Medical College.
The arrest, which took place late Monday evening, marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing investigations into the administrative practices at one of Kolkata’s premier medical institutions.
The financial irregularities case against Dr. Ghosh includes allegations of criminal conspiracy, cheating, and corruption under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The CBI’s FIR, registered on the directives of the Calcutta High Court, points towards significant financial mismanagement, including dealings with vendors without proper bidding processes and the sale of medical supplies under questionable circumstances.
The agency’s interest in Dr. Ghosh intensified following a series of allegations regarding financial misconduct, which surfaced amidst the tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor at the hospital on August 9, 2024.
Parallel to the financial probes, the CBI has been investigating the rape and murder case, where a Kolkata Police civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, has been arrested. The connection between these cases has led to widespread speculation and public outcry, demanding transparency and justice.
