Praveen of Indian origin contesting in Melbourne’s Merri-bek city council election – Here’s why it is important

As the electoral landscape of Merri-bek City, a local government area in metropolitan Melbourne, gears up for the 2024 council elections, the community is witnessing a vibrant and diverse array of candidates, each bringing their unique perspectives to the table.

Amongst the candidates is Praveen Kumar, who hails from Hyderabad, India.

Who is Praveen Kumar?

Mr. Praveen Kumar left for Melbourne in the late 1990s to pursue higher education, succeeded as a businessman, and evolved into a local community leader.

He worked for the Labor Party’s MP Peter Khalil in a federal position and is currently the president of the Australian Labour Party’s Broadmeadows division.

What position is he contesting for, and why is it important?

Of Merri-bek city’s 11 wards, Mr. Praveen is contesting for the Djirri-Djirri ward. Should he win, he would be the first person from the Telugu states to become an elected representative in any form of Australian government.

Australia, a land of immigrants, has had no person of Telugu origins in any elected position so far.

Also, given his experience in the federal government and his service in the Labour Party, if elected to the Ward, he could be elected Mayor or Deputy Mayor.

The 2024 Merri-bek City Council election is not just a local affair but a microcosm of broader societal trends towards sustainability, social justice, and community engagement. With a diverse field of candidates and an electorate increasingly aware of local issues, this election promises to be a pivotal moment for Merri-bek, shaping its future for years to come.

Political Landscape

Merri-bek, previously known as Moreland, has been a hotbed for progressive politics, with a mix of Greens, Labor, and Socialist Alliance representatives.

This election, however, could see a shift or reinforcement of this political composition, given the active campaigns focusing on housing affordability and environmental issues.

The Election Process

Voting will be conducted via postal ballot, with packs sent out from October 7, 2024. The deadline for voting is October 25, 2024.

For those with visual impairments, special arrangements are in place for large print or braille ballot packs, with registration for these services closing on September 10.

The election process also includes candidate information sessions from September 4 to 6 to foster transparency and engagement between candidates and the electorate.
