Athletes shoot their way to medals

The medal tally began with a golden start as Avani Lekhara defended her title in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1, not only securing India’s first gold but also setting a world record in the process. This victory was particularly sweet as Lekhara became the first Indian woman to win two gold medals at the Paralympic Games.

Alongside her, Mona Agarwal won bronze in the same event, marking the first time India achieved a double podium finish in a single event at the Paralympics.

The shooting contingent continued to shine, with Manish Narwal bagging a silver medal in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol SH1, adding to India’s medal count.

The success in shooting was further highlighted by Rubina Francis, who won a bronze in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 event, showcasing India’s depth in para-shooting.

Preethi Pal makes history

On the track, Preethi Pal made history by winning India’s first-ever medal in a track event at the Paralympics, securing bronze in the Women’s 100m T35.

Her achievements didn’t stop there; she won another bronze in the Women’s 200m T35, becoming the first Indian woman to win two medals in track events at the Paralympics or Olympics.

Nishad jumps his way to a silver

In the high jump event, Nishad Kumar clinched a silver medal with a season-best performance of 2.04 meters. The medal not only added to India’s tally but also highlighted the country’s growing strength in athletics at the Paralympic level.

The participation of 84 athletes across 12 sports disciplines, including new sports like para-cycling, para-rowing, and blind judo, reflected India’s commitment to expanding its presence in para-sports globally.
