The Andhra Pradesh government has renamed several welfare schemes, shifting the focus from political figures to educational and social icons.
Minister for Human Resource Development Nara Lokesh announced the decision, which aims to revitalize the schemes and align them with the government’s vision for holistic development.
The schemes, previously named after former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, have been rebranded to honor the likes of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, APJ Abdul Kalam, and Dokka Seethamma.
The change is seen as a step towards depoliticizing educational initiatives and acknowledging the contributions of eminent personalities in education and social service.
The education reward scheme which provides students with essentials such as uniforms, books, bags, shoes, and socks is named after Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second President of India.
The mid-day meal scheme has been renamed after ‘Apara Annapurna’ Dokka Seethamma, a woman remembered for her generosity in feeding the needy.
The talent awards have been renamed after Dr. Abdul Kalam, the renowned ‘Missile Man of India,’ in a deliberate effort to foster a spirit of innovation and ambition among the youth.
YSRCP leaders alleged that the change is politically motivated and does not address the underlying issues of the schemes.
The government stood by its decision, asserting that the renaming is a step towards a more inclusive and progressive approach to welfare schemes.
