After weeks of hinting it publicly, Telangana Cabinet has finally made it official. Like Kerala, West Bengal, Rajasthan, and Punjab, Telangana will pass an anti-CAA resolution in the State Assembly, Cabinet had decided.
Telangana Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao opined that the CAA discriminates based on religion and hence is against the Constitution of the Country.
Will this affect the Citizenship Amendment Act?
While mostly symbolic now, the resolution might reiterate the party’s political line (TRS voted against CAA in the Parliament) to the people.
On the other hand, it may help the state government deal with the random anti-CAA protests that have been breaking out in Hyderabad lately. Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar had to tweet over the weekend addressing the protestors. He cited the Supreme Court’s observations on Delhi protests and tried to explain why the Police can’t allow protests that could potentially disrupt public life.
